I love the texture and fragrance of this sedge. Aboriginal people used it for mat-making material that served many purposes, roofs and walls of temporary shelters, door covers, rugs, mattresses and wind breaks, for drying berries, and for cutting and drying meat and fish. Large bags were made to store dried roots, berries and fish. Over the years I have found that Tule rush is a wonderful material for functional bags, hats and bread baskets. For some reason, I started fiddling around with the bark and to my surprise it peeled away from the tree with ease. I realized, “this must be how the First Nations people peeled the bark to make baskets”! I’m fascinated of this annual sea vegetable that can grow up to 2 feet in one day and to a total length of up to 80ft. in a season! The beautiful colours and textures are a joy to weave into different whimsical forms.
